Prof. Stoecker did his PhD in 1979 from Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universitaet. He went on to GSI and as a DAAD postdoc fellow to UC Berkeley followed by Michigan State University & National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory in 1982. In 1985 he became Professor for Theoretical Physics & Astrophysics at Goethe Universitaet where he holds the Judah M. Eisenberg- endowed Chair since 2000. From 2000-2003 & 2006-2007 he was elected Vice-president at Goethe Universität. He was the scientific chairman & CEO at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research,2007-2015. In 2008 he was elected Vice-President of Helmholtz Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren & was re-elected 2010-2012. He is co-founder of International Facility for Antiproton & Ion Research in Europe, Helmholtz International Center for FAIR, Helmholtz Institut Jena, Helmholtz Institut Mainz, Helmholtz International Graduate School, HiRe for FAIR, FAIR Russia, FRRC Moscow, FIAS, FIGSS, FAIR Center for International Collaboration.
